The University of Virginia seeks an Internal Auditor to conduct financial, operational and compliance audits designed to ensure adherence to the organization's policies and procedures. The current opening is on the team that performs audits within the UVA Health System. This position will be filled at the Auditor-I, Auditor-II, or Senior Auditor level, depending on experience.

Internal Auditors assist in or conduct financial, operational, and compliance audits to assess adherence to the organization's policies and procedures. They review and evaluate internal controls and help to prepare audit reports recommending improvements in controls, operations or systems. Staff level auditors work under close supervision and according to established protocols. They ensure engagements are conducted using appropriate department methodology to ensure high quality, high value work is produced in accordance with the profession's standards. Senior level auditors complete audit engagements with greater independence and may review the work of other staff assigned to audit projects.

Job Duties:
  • Identify and document significant risks, controls in place to mitigate them, and proposed testing approach to develop Risk Assessment Document.
  • Recommend audit direction, scope and timing to Audit Management, based on Risk Assessment Document.
  • Manage work to scope and deadlines.
  • Document and evaluate, through appropriate testing methods, the effectiveness of internal controls and operations.
  • Prepare draft audit reports for Audit Management's review, communicating control or process efficiency and effectiveness based on testing performed.
  • In collaboration with audit client(s), develop recommendations to correct deficiencies or to strengthen internal controls.
  • Demonstrate and continue to build expertise in the functional discipline of internal auditing. Increase understanding of trends in higher education, academic medical centers, and research-intensive universities. Continually strive to develop technical skills and data literacy/use of data analytics-and apply these to daily work.


  • Qualified candidates must have a bachelor's degree in accounting or business related field. To be considered at the Auditor II level, candidates must have one year of experience as an auditor or at least two years of related experience. For Auditor II level candidates, Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is preferred. To be considered at the Senior Auditor level, two-three years of audit experience is required.

    This position offers an opportunity to gain broad-based, extensive knowledge of all aspects of healthcare administration through audit work throughout the UVA Health system. You can expect to work both as an individual contributor and as part of a team. You'll communicate with audit clients at all levels of the organization.

    This position is based in Charlottesville, VA. Depending on the work being performed and the incumbent's performance, there could be potential of a hybrid or telework environment, with at least 16 hours a week in the office.
